Tailoring this trip: With more than two weeks and a bigger budget, you could spend at least one week in Avoriaz and Tignes and two or three days in Combloux. You could also include days in Chamonix and Albertville on your trip

Getting there and transport

Fly into Geneva airport on a Wednesday to avoid the crowds travelling on a Sunday. Book your car hire online before your trip to get a good deal. Pick up the car at the airport. Make sure it come with winter tires, ice scraper and and ski racks or box if required. Remember the route includes toll roads, so have your euros or a credit card to hand.

Detour: Stop off at a Decathlon store (perhaps the one in Annemasse) for last minute essentials – cheap snow boots, extra socks and base layers.
